WAUW design turns 18

I feel very grown up now that my business is coming of age. It has been 18 years since WAUW design was established as a ceramic company with its own production, and has now been part of the Danish ceramics scene for 18 years. Wild. 

The adventure started in 2006, the same year I graduated from the Royal Academy - then known as Denmark's Design School. For the first nine years I ran the company together with Maranke de Vos, a fellow student who has also become a close friend. In 2016, love led Maranke to Germany, and since then I have been alone at the helm. 

From nomadic potter to permanent base on Willemoesgade

In the first years (2006-2007), WAUW design were 'nomadic potters' without their own workshop. In December 2006, we delivered our first major assignment to Kontra Coffee. It was big. That same month, on Christmas Eve, I became a mother for the second time. The first months of 2007 therefore passed with to breastfeed, apply for funds and find a workshop. Phew.

In January 2008, WAUW design found its permanent base in my current workshop in Willemoesgade on Østerbro. 

In 2011, WAUW opened a design shop in Læderstræde in inner Copenhagen, and in December 2015 the shop moved 'home' to the workshop on Willemoesgade, and since then the shop and workshop have been united under one roof.

A little about the inspiration and the good craftsmanship

Privately, I live in Christianshavn with my husband and our two children, aged 17 and 20. My upbringing on South Funen has been fertile ground for my inspiration, my childhood sailing trips in the South Funen Archipelago and the meeting between land and water have left their mark on my ceramics.

I take great pride in paying tribute to the craft's traditions and techniques, while at the same time exploring new ways to develop myself. WAUW design is more than just a company – it is a passion for creating something that brings joy and value to everyday life. Quality, aesthetics, sustainability and orderliness are the cornerstones of everything I do.

I particularly like developing glazes for my products - like painting and creating new colors and structures. My objects are my canvas and I cast, turn and model each product with care.

Good business partners over time

Over the years, I have had the pleasure of working with talented employees, interns from all over the world - from France to Canada - as well as people who, for various reasons, needed a hand back into the labor market. They have all made an effort and left their mark, I am grateful to each and every one of them.

During the last 18 years, I have had the pleasure of building close relationships with my customers and business partners. It is precisely these relationships and our shared love of good design that help drive WAUW design forward.

I'm looking forward to the next 18 years!
