New turned ceramic products in the store

I have recently been turning a series of cups, bowls and vases in stoneware clay. When I turn the clay, it is completely red, and after the first firing (pre-firing) it still has a reddish color. But when the pottery is finished firing (glaze firing), the magic happens: The red clay becomes yellowish.

 

When the glaze should play together with the clay

Of course, I have also tested different glazes, like the glaze nerd that I am. But this particular type of clay has proven to be a bit of a challenge. It absorbs a lot, and this makes the glazes very dark, almost regardless of what color they are. That's why I have experimented with coloring some of the clay, so that the colors have a better chance of coming into their own. Fortunately, it seems to work for some.

I have become particularly fond of the green and whitish glazes. They come out beautifully and are a nice contrast to the raw exterior, where you can still see and feel the ceramic. I have also developed a keen eye for the light blue glaze, which takes on some really nice nuances after firing. It is precisely these kinds of small discoveries that make working with handmade ceramics so exciting.

It's in the experiments that it gets exciting.

One of the things I love most about working with handmade ceramics, is that you can't always predict the final result. Colors and glazes can change during firing, and sometimes something completely different comes out than I had imagined. That's part of the charm – and right now I'm excited to see how far I can go with the different colors and the yellowish stoneware clay.
